The Science of Oil and Water
How does ink stick to specific areas if everything is level? It comes down to chemistry. The plate relies on the principle that oil and water do not mix.
The printing areas are treated to be oleophilic. They love oil. The nonprinting areas are hydrophilic. They love water.
During the process, the plate is dampened with a water-based fountain solution first. The water sticks to the nonprinting areas. It creates a barrier. Then, the oil-based ink is rolled over the surface. The ink cannot stick to the water. It only adheres to the image areas.
This is the core mechanic of offset printing.
