Data transfer speeds are increasing. Wireless networks are everywhere. There are no limits to what you can do with a smartphone. This is good news. Bad news? We haven’t found the “perfect” phone yet. Nobody has. There are no general standards for shape, size or input method. You get a flip phone. You get a slab. You get a screen the size of a tablet. Each new version brings new design ideas, but the underlying hardware and software landscape remains fragmented.

The field is wide. No developer has ever won a design war. No manufacturer has locked in a perfect input method. We are still experimenting. We’re still breaking things. And while we tinker with shapes and screens, you need to be careful who you trust with our data.
