You’ve probably heard that a standard USB port tops out at 12 megabits per second. That number sounds like a hard limit, but it’s actually a shared resource. In reality, an individual device on that port can only grab up to 6 Mbps. Add more gadgets to the mix, and that bandwidth gets sliced up further. The result? A choppy connection when multiple devices try to talk at once.
Ethernet takes a different approach. It plugs directly into the computer’s internal bus. You get two main choices here. Ten megabits per second. Or one hundred. If you are using a cable modem, late-night speeds can occasionally push past 10 Mbps when the neighborhood isn’t busy. Most of the time though, you are looking at just a few megabits per second. Installing a 100-Mbps Ethernet card gives you headroom for those rare peak moments.
The real advantage isn’t just raw speed. It’s consistency. Ethernet is dedicated to network traffic. USB has to juggle keyboards, mice, and drives all at the same time. This competition for bandwidth creates bottlenecks that Ethernet simply avoids.
There is a trade-off. Installation. Plugging in a USB device takes five seconds. You don’t need to open the computer case. An Ethernet card requires physical access to the motherboard. You have to crack the casing. It takes effort. But for steady performance, that effort usually pays off.
Do Modems Have USB Ports?
Not every modem includes one. But if yours does, what is the point? Typically, it connects the modem to a computer. Some manufacturers use it for other tasks. Connecting a printer. Attaching an external hard drive. It’s a versatile port, but not a replacement for a dedicated network card if you need reliable speed.
