It sounds like high school physics, but it’s the reason your office printer actually works. Laser printers rely on static electricity—the same force that makes socks vanish in the dryer or gives you a shock when you touch a doorknob after shuffling across carpet. This charge builds up on insulated objects. Opposite charges attract, so they cling.
Think of it as temporary glue for paper.
The magic happens in the photoreceptor. This is usually a revolving drum or cylinder inside the machine. It’s coated in a special material that is photoconductive. That means it conducts electricity when hit by light. In the dark, it holds a charge. When light hits it, that charge disappears.
This drum assembly is the heart of the printing process. It uses static electricity to pull toner onto paper. Without it, you’d just have a very expensive paperweight.
