iTunes is Apple’s central hub for managing digital media. It works on Macs and PCs. You can also use it on iPhones, iPads, and older iPods. The app is free. You download it directly from Apple.
Once installed, you have three main ways to fill your library. You can rip tracks from physical CDs. You can import existing audio files from your hard drive. Or you can buy songs directly from the iTunes Store.
Here is how each method actually works.
Importing Audio CDs
This is the classic way to digitize a collection. It requires a computer with an optical drive.
- Launch iTunes.
- Insert a music CD.
- A prompt appears asking if you want to import the disc.
If you want everything, click Yes. iTunes will rip the entire album into your library.
Sometimes you only want specific songs. Click No in that case. You will see a list of tracks. Click the checkmarks next to the songs you don’t want. Remove the crosses. Then click Import CD.
The software converts the audio. It places the files in your iTunes Music folder. This process takes time. It depends on the speed of your drive and the quality settings in your preferences.
Adding Local Music Files
You might have MP3s, AACs, or other formats sitting on your computer. iTunes can ingest these too. But it does not always play nice by default. You need to check one setting first.
Open iTunes and go to Preferences. Select the Advanced tab. Look for the option that says Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library. Make sure this box is checked. Click OK.
Why does this matter? If this is off, iTunes just creates a shortcut. It does not move the file. If you delete the original file later, your library breaks. Checking this box ensures the data lives inside iTunes.
Now, go to the File menu. Choose Add File to Library on a Mac. On a PC, the option is usually Add File to Library as well. Browse to your desired file. Select it.
iTunes copies the file to its own folder. It adds the metadata. The song now appears in your main library view.
Buying and Downloading from the iTunes Store
This is the most frictionless method. It requires an Apple ID and a payment method.
- Open the iTunes Store section within the app or visit the Apple website.
- Browse categories.
- Find the album or single.
- Click the price button.
- Complete the purchase.
The music downloads automatically. It appears in your “Purchased” tab. From there, you can sync it to any device linked to that Apple ID.
There is no manual copying involved. Apple handles the distribution. The files are typically in AAC format. This is a proprietary codec. It offers good quality at smaller file sizes compared to uncompressed WAV files.
Why This Still Matters
You might think iTunes is dead. Apple Music replaced it as the primary streaming service. But the desktop application remains a tool for local file management.
