The Exit Strategy
Meta’s slow-motion breakup with its own VR ecosystem left a lot of people hollow. Especially the folks hooked on Supernatural. The subscription fitness app basically stopped producing new content earlier this year. Dead in the water. Or so it seemed.
Now, there is a comeback. And this time, Meta is nowhere in the ownership chain.
Independent Again, Expensive
A message to fans on Tuesday set the stage. An independent company called Supernatural Health is bringing the app back in the fall.
Here is the good news: The coaches are back. They were always the heart of the experience anyway. The Q&A from the new entity confirms this.
The bad news? The price hike.
$180 a year.
$20 a month.
Previously, it was $100 yearly or $10 monthly. That is almost double the cost. But people are paying attention.
The old app still exists for now. It is a digital ghost town though, with no new workouts or songs. By December 3, however, it vanishes. Current subscriptions end then. Everyone must migrate to the new app to keep sweating.
Timing remains vague. The “fall” window is wide.
Relief, Not Celebration
I feel relieved. Why?
Because Supernatural was where I spent the most hours on my Quest 3. It wasn’t just exercise. It made me feel empowered. Motivated.
When Meta decided to abandon it, it hurt. Actually wrecked a bit of the vibe. Judging by the fiery posts in the Facebook community, I was definitely not alone in that grief.
Uncertain Horizons
Still cautious though.
Will the release cadence hold up? Will songs drop regularly?
Supernatural Health promises new features based on community feedback. That’s what they say. It’s unclear if they can deliver at scale.
Also, consider this: If Meta isn’t holding the reins, could this hit other VR platforms eventually? Other fitness titans like FitXR and Les Mills BodyCombat are already platform-agnostic. It is possible. Maybe.
As for Meta?
This feels like another retreat from the dream of owning every key app on Horizon OS.
That shift might be healthy. Meta dissolved several acquired game studios earlier this year anyway. Owning everything didn’t work.
Supernatural is returning. The price tag hurts, but the app lives. For now.
