The Pokémon Company marked its 30th anniversary today with a comprehensive presentation detailing upcoming games, updates to existing titles, and a range of celebratory events. The broadcast, streamed on YouTube, showcased a substantial roadmap for the franchise’s future, building on its legacy of 1,025 Pokémon since the original 151.
The Next Generation: Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves
The most significant announcement was the reveal of the 10th generation mainline Pokémon games, Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves. A brief teaser video ignited fan excitement, with the games slated for release in 2027. The new titles introduce three starter Pokémon: Browt (bird-like), Pombon (dog-like), and Gecqua (gecko-like), promising a fresh adventure for trainers.
Nostalgia and Modern Updates
The event also celebrated Pokémon’s history with the Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue Game Music Collection. This retro-inspired product is a mini Game Boy-style jukebox that plays all 45 songs from the original games, using collectible “cartridges” for song selection. This caters to long-time fans while acknowledging the franchise’s roots.
Expanding the Pokémon Ecosystem
Beyond the core games, The Pokémon Company announced expansions across multiple platforms:
- Pokémon World Championships & Pokémon XP: The annual championships will be combined with a new fan festival, Pokémon XP, featuring interactive events, workshops, and meet-and-greets.
- Pokémon Trading Card Game: The 30th anniversary will be celebrated with special product releases later this year.
- Pokémon GO: A “huge range of Pokémon” will return to the mobile game as part of the festivities.
- Mobile Game Updates: Pokémon Masters EX, Pokémon Café ReMix, Pokémon Sleep, and Pokémon United will receive updates, including new characters, missions, and content.
- Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket: Players can earn rewards through “30 Days of Gifts” missions.
Classic Titles Reimagined
For retro gaming enthusiasts, the event included the re-release of Pokémon Fire/Red and Pokémon Leaf/Green as downloadable titles for Switch and Switch 2. These remakes will also integrate with Pokémon Home for cross-game transfers. Pokémon XD Gale of Darkness (GameCube, 2005) is also coming to Nintendo GameCube Classics on the Switch 2 in March.
New Experiences: Pokémon Champions and Pokémon Pokopia
Pokémon Champions, a battle-focused multiplayer game, is set for release in April, with a mobile version following later this year. The event also showcased Pokémon Pokopia, a unique title blending Pokémon with the life simulation of Animal Crossing. Players transform into a Ditto and build a town, farm, and home.
Mega Evolution Returns: Pokémon Legends: Z-A
Mega Garchomp Z has been discovered in the Mega Dimensions DLC for Pokémon Legends: Z-A, adding a new challenge for players.
The Pokémon Company’s 30th-anniversary presentation signals a robust future for the franchise, balancing nostalgia with innovation. With updates across multiple platforms and the introduction of a new generation, Pokémon continues to evolve while honoring its enduring legacy.
