Major League Soccer (MLS) begins its 2026 regular season this weekend, February 21st, with significant changes to broadcasting and fan engagement. This year, all MLS matches will be streamed live on Apple TV, eliminating the need for a separate MLS Season Pass subscription. The move marks a major shift in accessibility for US soccer fans, as the league prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted across North America.
Streamlined Access and Star Power
Subscribers to Apple TV ($13/month) now have full access to MLS games, including matches featuring global stars like Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), Son Heung Min (LAFC), and Timo Werner (San Jose Earthquakes). This is a deliberate attempt to draw more casual viewers into the league, leveraging recognizable talent and simplified viewing options.
Broadcast Innovations: Walmart Saturday Showdown and EverPass
MLS is introducing two key additions to its broadcasting strategy: the Walmart Saturday Showdown and a partnership with EverPass Media. The Walmart Saturday Showdown will highlight one regular-season match each Saturday with enhanced production, including behind-the-scenes footage and fan interactions captured using iPhone cameras. EverPass will distribute live MLS games to bars, restaurants, and hotels, making games accessible to fans who prefer a social viewing experience.
Future Scheduling Changes
This season marks the last year of the traditional spring-to-autumn schedule. Starting in 2027-2028, MLS will align with European leagues by switching to a summer-to-spring calendar. This adjustment aims to improve competitiveness and better integrate with the global soccer calendar.
Key Matchups for Opening Weekend
The opening weekend features several notable matchups:
- February 21st: LAFC vs. Inter Miami (9:30 p.m. ET) – the inaugural Walmart Saturday Showdown match.
- February 21st: St. Louis City vs. Charlotte FC (2:30 p.m. ET).
- February 22nd: LA Galaxy vs. New York City (7 p.m. ET).
The season will pause between May 25th and July 16th to accommodate the FIFA World Cup.
MLS is betting big on accessibility and fan engagement to grow the sport’s footprint in the United States. The league’s changes to Apple TV and the introduction of new broadcast features are a clear signal that it intends to capitalize on the momentum generated by the upcoming World Cup.
