Companies are tired of renting their AI brains

Hugging Face’s CEO, Clem Delangue, sees a shift happening. Open source AI is booming. His platform has evolved into what feels like the GitHub for AI, a hub where builders share models and datasets. About half the Fortune 500 now uses it. The pattern repeats constantly. Companies begin with frontier APIs. Then they scale. The costs get absurd.

Suddenly.

Open source becomes the only logical exit.

Rebecca Bellan discussed this dynamic with Delangue on the latest TechCrunch Equity podcast. They dug into why the war between open and closed source actually matters. Especially after Anthropic halted their Fable release. Delangue worries about consolidation. He fears a small cluster of giant companies could eventually hold the reins on everything.

Is that the future we want?

Probably not.
