Apps Are Obsolete: Nothing CEO Predicts the Rise of AI Agents

Nothing CEO Carl Pei envisions a radical shift in how we interact with technology: the decline of smartphone apps in favor of AI agents that anticipate and execute our needs autonomously. During a recent appearance at SXSW, Pei argued that the current app-based smartphone experience is fundamentally outdated, resembling the clunky interface of Palm Pilots from decades ago.

The Inefficiency of Modern Smartphones

Pei highlighted the cumbersome nature of even simple tasks on modern smartphones. Getting a coffee, for example, requires navigating multiple apps – messaging, maps, ride-sharing, and calendars – a process he considers needlessly complex. The future, according to Pei, lies in AI that understands user intent and acts on it without explicit commands. Instead of manually launching and interacting with apps, the device will “just do it for you,” preemptively fulfilling needs before they are even voiced.

From Basic Automation to Predictive AI

The evolution will occur in stages. Initial steps, already being tested by some companies, involve AI features that execute simple commands like booking travel. However, Pei dismisses this as uninspired. The true breakthrough will occur when AI learns long-term user behavior, offering proactive suggestions based on deep understanding.

“The system knows us so well, it will come up with things that we don’t even [know] we wanted,” Pei explained, drawing parallels to the memory function in ChatGPT.

This implies a shift from reactive technology to an anticipatory system that not only responds to commands but anticipates and fulfills unspoken desires.

The Interface of the Future

Pei emphasizes that this transition necessitates a new interface – not one designed for human navigation, but one optimized for AI agents. Current app-based systems force AI to mimic human interaction (menus, taps, scrolling), which he deems unsustainable. The future interface will be agent-centric, enabling seamless execution without human-like friction.

While acknowledging that apps aren’t disappearing overnight (Nothing itself still supports mini-apps through its operating system), Pei insists that the long-term trajectory points towards an app-less paradigm where AI acts as an invisible, proactive intermediary between users and the digital world. The era of manually browsing through app stores is coming to an end.

This vision isn’t just a technological prediction; it’s a fundamental restructuring of how we use technology. If Pei’s assessment holds true, the next generation of devices will operate on a principle of seamless execution, not deliberate interaction.
