Apple iPhones are set to become more versatile beyond traditional cellular and Wi-Fi networks. Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, citing sources familiar with Apple’s plans, states that the company is actively developing several new features leveraging satellite connectivity. These include enhanced navigation within Apple Maps and the ability to send photos via messages – all powered by satellites. Developers will also gain access to a dedicated API, enabling them to incorporate satellite capabilities into their own apps.
This expansion builds upon Apple’s initial foray into satellite technology launched in 2024 with the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. The existing Emergency SOS feature enables users to send distress signals via satellite when cellular and Wi-Fi connections are unavailable. However, this function currently necessitates a clear view of the sky – a limitation that Apple appears poised to overcome. Gurman suggests Apple is developing technology allowing satellite connectivity even when the iPhone is within an enclosed space, like a pocket or vehicle, or indoors.
Further bolstering these capabilities, Apple intends to introduce support for 5G NTN (non-terrestrial networks) beginning next year. This system blends 5G technology with satellites to extend wireless coverage beyond the reach of standard cellular towers.
While exciting advancements are on the horizon, some iPhone functionalities, such as phone calls, video chats, and web browsing via satellite, aren’t immediately part of Apple’s roadmap. Moreover, users should anticipate potential costs associated with these enhanced satellite services. Currently, features like Emergency SOS are provided free of charge, but future advanced capabilities may incur separate fees payable directly to satellite carriers.
Apple currently partners with Globalstar, an American telecommunications company, for its satellite connectivity services. Implementing the new features detailed by Gurman would necessitate substantial upgrades to Globalstar’s infrastructure. However, a potential acquisition of Globalstar by Elon Musk’s SpaceX – currently in preliminary discussions – could potentially expedite this rollout.
