The competition between Google’s Gemini and OpenAI’s ChatGPT is intensifying, but instead of battling over code or speed, they’re now fighting to become your personal AI shopper. Both companies are rolling out new features designed to integrate shopping directly into their chatbot experiences, turning casual conversation into instant purchases.

Google Gemini’s Direct Shopping Integration

Google has partnered with Gap Inc. to enable Gemini to directly purchase clothing from Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, and Athleta. If you ask Gemini for shopping suggestions, it can now show you products from these brands within the chat window, allowing you to buy without leaving the interface. This is powered by Google’s Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a system designed to standardize AI-driven purchases across retailers. Customers will checkout using Google Pay, and Gap handles fulfillment.

This move is part of a broader trend: retailers are exploring AI as a new discovery channel, bypassing traditional search engines. Similar integrations already exist with Walmart and Target, suggesting a growing push toward AI-assisted commerce.

OpenAI’s Shift Away from Built-In Checkout

Interestingly, OpenAI is taking a slightly different approach. After launching a built-in checkout feature in ChatGPT earlier this year, the company has quietly walked back from it. Sales through ChatGPT’s direct checkout were reportedly “disappointing,” according to a Walmart executive speaking to Wired. OpenAI is now shifting toward allowing retailers to launch their own “apps” within ChatGPT, rather than managing transactions directly.

This suggests that while consumers may be open to AI-powered product discovery, the actual checkout experience still needs refinement. OpenAI is instead focusing on enhancing how products are displayed in ChatGPT, including visual comparison tools for price, reviews, and features.

Enhanced Product Presentation

OpenAI has improved ChatGPT’s speed, relevance, and product coverage to deliver more up-to-date information. The chatbot now enables side-by-side product comparisons, making it easier for users to evaluate options. These updates are available to all ChatGPT users, including those with free, Plus, and Pro subscriptions.
